Class Assignments
Current Assignment:
For Friday, Nov. 18th
Blog Assignment: Propose a name for my pup.
Post a thoughtful name suggestion on the picture page, and write a paragraph trying to persuade me to choose the name you propose.
Think of the formal aspects of a proposal argument:
I am your audience. The proposal is for the future. Why should I choose your name, and what are the benefits?
My only criteria are: the name has to be relatively easy to say, (or able to be shortened for a nickname), and somewhat unique--no Spots, or Rovers please. Some points to consider when thinking up your name: the breed's origin and history (Papillon), the dogs appearance (no Oreo's), or personality--(I don't know the dog's personality yet, but you can get an idea from the breed descritipon on the AKC or similar website.) You can also consider my interests--I like the arts: music, literature, painting, movies, theater...and well you get the idea. After everyone has written their responses, the class will vote on their favorite, and I will select a favorite as well. The winning selection(s)--will get a small prize and some extra credit--so you have incentive to come up with some good names.

Alternative assignment to the puppy naming blog
If you don't want to help me come up with a name--here's another option. Write a proposal. Following the guidlines for a proposal on the handout that I gave you, write a 500 word proposal concerning a topic of your choice.

Wal-mart---write a blog, proposing a solution to a specific audience regarding wal-mart.
Extra credit:

Here is the link to the Walmart Documentary we watched.
1.) Write a blog on one of the following topics related to the documentary we partially viewed in class.

2.) Picture your audience as someone who is against Walmart. Your task is to persuade them that Walmart is GOOD for America.
--We did not watch as much of the video clip as I had planned, however, if you want feel free to address any of the following choices:
Against:
A.) Basic argument: Walmart is bad for America
Your audience: a lower-income family of five
B.) Basic argument: Walmart is BAD for America
Your audience: Walmart’s shareholders
For:
C.) Basic argument: Walmart is GOOD for America
Your audience: a former employee(s) of a factory in Circleville that went out of business because it could not compete with foreign competition—outsourcing, which Walmart and other big companies support.
D.) Basic argument: Walmart is GOOD for America
Your audience: Go to the page: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/walmart/talk and respond to the argument of one of the posters critiquing Walmart.
